Benefits Of Having Granite Tile Countertops

granite-tile-countertopsAlthough the use of granite tile countertops is nothing new, there has been a resurgence of interest for this natural stone product lately. This is mainly due to the fact that new “models” for this particular kind of kitchen countertop option is becoming more versatile, more attractive and more affordable by the minute. Earlier models for this kind of igneous rock used to be limited to huge blocks of stone cut in square and rectangular dimensions only. A homeowner would need to build a sturdy base to support the weight of the granite tile countertops.

Also, when it comes to colors, this kitchen top option could only be availed of in simple marbling effects in base colors of black and white, with an occasionally a sprinkling of brown and copper. And lastly, since the igneous rocks are cut in huge slabs, you would need an equally large slab of money to have these installed.

Fortunately, the newer models coming out are now thinner in dimensions, which make it easier to install using do-it-yourself or DIY kits. Thinner slabs of stone also means it can be cut in almost any shape possible, making it easier to custom fit it to any surface – no matter how oddly shaped or how flimsy looking the base may be. Colors for the tiles now come in all gamuts of colors from solid hues of black, white and gray – to marbled combinations in brown, emerald, gold, green, tan and yellow. And as stated before, prices are actually going down while quality is going up. Thinner granite tile countertops make for cheaper costs, both on the actual stone product and on amount needed to install it.

This kitchen top option has many other benefits, including the stone’s inherent hardness and strength. This makes it a valuable investment for people who are not particularly keen on renovating kitchens because the countertops keep chipping off or fading out with their colors. Additionally, granite is very dense. Its manner of formation is very similar to diamonds, with high pressure + carbon; only this time, the equation goes: hot liquid magma + igneous rock = granite slabs. This type of density makes the igneous stone highly resistant to bacteria and other fungal growths that usually appear in the work area of the kitchen.

Maintenance is relatively easy too. You basically just have to wipe clean and dry. Cleaning solutions containing acid and bleach, or abrasive cleaners like scouring powders are unnecessary since the granite countertop can be dabbed clean using a soft cloth and water only. The only thing to remember here is to wipe the surface with a dry cloth often to remove or lessen unsightly water spots on the surface. To eliminate the possibility of scratches and discoloration, it is advisable that sharp tools like knives and forks are never directly used on the granite surface (use a chopping board); and that protective mats or coasters should be used when placing cold or hot materials (like pitchers or pans) on the countertop.
